Of the eight parties, Morena is the only one that wants to take public money away from parties, and it says so wholeheartedly. Its 2024 platform promised much cheaper elections, and in March 2026 its deputies voted 246 to 3 for President Claudia Sheinbaum's electoral reform, which reduced that funding. The reform fell short of a two-thirds majority because its partners, the PT and the PVEM, voted no; in the quiz both stay in the middle, while the PAN and SOMOS reject it. The same reform explains its other oddity: under the slogan "No to hand-picked list seats," Morena fully supports electing proportional-representation deputies at the polls, and the only party beside it, one notch lower, is the PAN, the party it matches least (49%).
That is why "Elections and parties" is its second most distinctive theme, at 2.36 points. The first, "Justice and the judiciary" (2.62 points), is ground it shares with its allies: in 2024 its caucus passed, 250 votes to none, the reform that puts the whole judiciary, up to the Supreme Court, on the ballot; its program of action defends it, and in 2026 it backed postponing the next judicial election to 2028 without scrapping it. "Security and armed forces" (1.68 points) shows a tension between rhetoric and votes: its program holds that violence is not beaten by reaching for force first, yet the party voted to put the National Guard under the Defense ministry and to widen automatic pretrial jail.
Its clashes with its allies are specific. On nepotism, Morena barred itself from nominating relatives of outgoing officeholders in 2027, and in the quiz it lines up with the PAN, the PRI and Movimiento Ciudadano, not with the PT or the PVEM, which prefer to wait until 2030. On the economy, the PT stands further left: it wants a yearly levy on large fortunes and state control of banking, while Morena sits in the middle on the first, since the president said such a tax deserves study but is not planned, and disagrees with the second. On trade it sides with the PVEM: they are the only two in favor of keeping high tariffs on China, and the PT abstained in that vote.
Several answers come from its 2024 platform rather than from votes. No other party is as firm about granting no new mining concessions, except for lithium, which the State exploits; only the PT also agrees. With the PT, it alone opposes paying private clinics to treat the uninsured: its model is a universal public system. On fracking it stays in the middle, because the platform promised not to use it and in 2026 the president asked for a study of pilot projects. Of its 9 estimated positions, two fall in education, its fourth most distinctive theme (1.38 points).
Altogether, Morena answers 19 of the 45 statements in favor, 12 in an intermediate position and 14 against, with 15 answers at the extremes. Its themes closest to the average are "Work and pensions" (0.29 points) and "Rights and freedoms" (0.52 points), where it agrees, short of the extreme, with legal abortion (though its documents avoid the word) and with easing identity changes for trans people. Its coalition partners, the PVEM and the PT, resemble it most, at 86% each.
How the eight parties’ places on the political compass are calculated, statement by statement, is explained in the analysis «Left-wing and right-wing parties in Mexico: the 2027 compass».
