Sonora, from 2024 to 2027
In 2024 Sonora had the second-lowest turnout in the federal deputy election: 50.7% of its electoral roll voted, almost ten points below the national average, and only Baja California recorded a lower figure. Among those who did vote, Morena won 48.2% of the valid vote. Behind it, three parties finished within two points of one another: 13.1% for the PRI, 12.8% for the PAN and 11.1% for Movimiento Ciudadano.
All seven districts went to Sigamos Haciendo Historia, which ran united in every one. The only close race was district 5, one of two in Hermosillo, which the coalition won by 6.6 points; elsewhere the gap was at least 27.0, with the widest margins in Navojoa (7), the state's Indigenous district, and Cajeme (6). Together, Morena, the PT (6.6%) and the Greens (6.2%) gathered 61.1%, and the PAN, PRI and PRD 27.8%, with the PRD under 2%.
Sonora renews its governorship, the 33 seats of its congress and 72 municipal councils in 2027; unlike other states with a governor's race, residents abroad cannot vote for that office. It runs on Mexican Pacific time (UTC−7) all year: the law gives it no daylight saving time, so in June it matches Baja California, which does observe it. In October 2026 its electoral roll stood at 2,371,363 people, and two of its district seats, San Luis Río Colorado and Nogales, lie on the border.
